Tips to Prepare your House
This is a list of ideas that may or may not apply to your particular
property. Generally speaking, these items can enhance your curb appeal and the
overall presentation of your property. In some cases, you won't be able to
implement items from this list (e.g., some condo associations will prohibit
items in the common areas). So, just apply what works best for your
situation.
Exterior
- Freshly mulch any garden areas
- Add a pot of colorful flowers to your exterior entry
- Trim exterior trees or shrubbery
- If you have pets, make sure you frequently remove any waste in or around
your yard.
- Paint your front door (if you live in an HOA community, make sure the color
you select meets your community's requirements).
Interior
- Remove Clutter. No one is surprised to see boxes in storage areas. So
pack up the clutter and put it away.
- Get a head start on your packing. If you need to free up counter or
cabinet space, box up some less-used items and put them neatly into storage.
Will you really need those martini glasses in the next sixty days?
- Apply fresh caulk to kitchen and bath areas.
- Wash the exteriors of your cabinets. If you have older style cabinets,
consider upgrading your hardware. Shiny new knobs/handles can really enhance
the appearance of your cabinetry.
- Insure that you have fresh light bulbs in all of your lighting fixtures
(interior and exterior).
- Dust areas your might not routinely dust, including crown molding,
baseboards, air vents, chandeliers and other light fixtures, ceiling fans,
etc.
- Replace furnace filters.
- Resist the temptation to scent. It's more important that a house smells
clean than that it smells like English lavender.
- Trash the trash. Now is a great time to get an under-the-cabinet trash
bin. And, make sure you empty it frequently.
